UPDATE:

We just released an update for iOS: 1.4.1.

  • Fixed tap n’ hold menu not showing up.
  • Added privacy policy link to options menu.

Enjoy!

Hello Ghostery iOS users on the move!

We have a shiny new version of Ghostery for iOS ready for you to surf as you move about town. Ghosty has a subtle new look about him as well as some new features.

This update includes the most expansive improvements since the initial release of Ghostery for iOS. We are very excited about the new “PAC”** (proxy automatic configuration) file feature. It lets you block trackers across ALL your apps! This means if you can now block tracking when you’re using your favorite apps like Angry Birds, Weather Channel, or any other app. Please keep in mind that this does require additional setup, which is detailed in the app itself. Another important note is that this is an experimental feature and may not be for everyone. There are instances when it may not behave as intended and need to be disabled. It is also recommended that you use Chrome browser for iOS or our Ghostery browser when surfing with the pac enabled. Mobile Safari does not like blocking content so it tends to hang, causing slowness issues. If you want to find out more about how this feature works this page might be informative.

** Your phone will download this file to local cache and use the local file. You don’t need a persistent connection to Ghostery cloudfront server.

We are also pumped about all the little improvements we have made to the usability of the app. The ‘Block new trackers by default’ option, should be something that anyone who tends to block all trackers should look at because newly downloaded trackers will be un-blocked by default. Another usability improvement is the unified search/address bar which will make it simpler to navigate while surfing. The new version also has a larger viewable area for the website being loaded because of the new scrolling logic hiding/showing certain toolbars where it makes sense.

By now, most of our Ghostery for iOS users have already received the update notice from the App Store, but anyone using iOS7 not currently using it can download it here.

Here are the release notes:

  • iOS7 styling and new logos

  • Scrolling logic for iPhone to mirror behavior in mobile Safari and Chrome for iOS

  • Wifi protection via PAC (proxy automatic configuration) file

  • Ghostrank™ collection of page statistics

  • Tap and hold for new tabs

  • Added ‘Block new trackers by default’ option in the Settings -> Ghostery

We would love to have your feedback on the new usability improvements or if you have any ideas to help us make Ghostery better.  Click here to let us know.

Happy browsing!

When is Ghostery going to address control of locally shared objects, those nasty persistent cookies? We need this in both iOS and desktop versions.

Ghostery uses DuckDuckGo search because of privacy, but does it over HTTP instead of HTTPS.

Thanks for using Ghostery Balla, HTTPS is on the roadmap for Ghostery iOS.

Just wanted to say how happy I’ve found DuckDuckGo and Ghostery. Thoroughly tired of being the product, as it were.
