Exploring the Internet with Ghostery

Hello Ghosterians,

We have a lot of new Ghostery users – welcome to all of you! We’re glad you’re using Ghostery.

There has been some confusion about downloading, installing, and using Ghostery in Internet Explorer.  First, it’s important to note that 64 bit Windows is not a technically supported environment for Ghostery in IE. Some users report that with an IE restart, Ghostery works fine on their 64 bit installation, but others are reporting issues.  If you have a 64 bit OS, you might want to try Ghostery for Firefox or Chrome.

For other users, we created a short video to walk-through the process and hopefully get you started on Ghostery for IE.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@ghostery.com

Happy Browsing!

I had the problem with IE9 on a 64-bit AMD-chipped machine. After installation, IE bombed on start up.

It works great on Chrome though (same 64-bit machine).

    Thanks.

How do I block the Meebo bar popup?

    • adam on May 2, 2012 at 1:55 pm

You can select it in Ghostery’s options.

When I try to install by downloading from http://www.ghostery.com, it opens a new window and in the middle of the window there is a box that says “Ghostery Web Installer” and “Ghostery IE plugin installation”. I don’t get the warning bar that asks me to allow the add on to install.

When I try to download it from http://www.ghostery.com/download, when it opens the new window, I get the same message in the middle of the window, and the warning bar pops up, but when I try to click on it to allow the add on, IE stops responding and hangs up. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Windows xp sp3 32bit. I also can not download IE8 to upgrade.(That message while attemptimg to download IE8 from official website claimed the official Mircrosoft IE8 something.exe file is not a valid 32bit program/author not verified.)

EI goes into a loop and crashes – leaving this message:

We were unable to return you to ghostery.com.

Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem.
      What you can do:
      Go to your home page

      Try to return to ghostery.com

      More information

When a website causes a failure or crash, Internet Explorer attempts to restore the site. It stops after two tries to avoid an endless loop.

0 search results for “How to install Ghostery (Safari)”
Is that all the answer, I can get?

    • Pete on August 30, 2012 at 1:42 pm

      Hi Kurt,

Thanks for your interest in Ghostery!

To instal Ghostery for Safari.. you can either install from the Apple extensions page or from ghostery.com/download. Once you have.. you can double click the install package from your downloads folder. This will prompt Safari to open and the Ghostery set-up wizard will guide you through the rest! If you have more specific questions shoot me an email at support@ghostery.com.. I’ll be happy to help you get things rolling.

I have read over your site and can find no info on if Ghostery will work or be affected by Anti Spyware and Malware programs. Certainly don’t want to start a huge fight on my ‘puter!
    Thanks!

      Hi Wendy,

Thanks for thinking about downloading Ghostery. The extension gets along just fine with most other programs.
