New and Fancy! Ghostery for Firefox V.2.9

February 27, 2013
By Pete

New patch: There was an issue reported that certain trackers were not being blocked when checked off. This included the Google AJAX Search API Widget. That wasn’t cool, so we fixed it. Thanks to everyone that let us know about it so quickly! You can read the full release notes here.

Hello all Ghostery for Firefox Users!

We are very excited to announce the release of Ghostery for Firefox 2.9.1.

We have taken all of your feedback to heart and are very proud of the result. We think you will be too.

What you will see right off is that the findings panel has been completely redesigned.

You asked for the Findings Panel to be more straightforward with a 1-click approach. -> You got it.

~ You asked for the ability to whitelist trackers by site. ->  You got it!

~ You asked to be notified when a tracker may cause site issues. -> You got it!

~ We added a “Copy to Clipboard” link next to each found tracker source. -> We thought that would be cool…. so you got it!

Click here to see a video walking through the new features.

In addition to those feature updates, we fixed a few bugs:

- Fixed toolbar button styling on Windows and Linux

- Miscellaneous bug fixes

As always, we thank you, the users of Ghostery for providing great feedback and assisting us in driving our product to be the best it can be.

Drop us a line and tell us what you think on either our forum or support@ghostery.com

Enjoy and happy browsing.

Seriously everyone should have this add-on.
If you dont have it already try it now!
This add-on is so polished, other blockers are just way behind.

If I just knew how to update it now :)

    • Pete on February 28, 2013 at 11:19 pm

      Greetings!

      Thanks for using Ghostery!

      Update which part?

The version should update automatically.. If not, go into Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > click the gears icon at the top and click “Check for Updates”.

Your blocking library can be updated by clicking “Update Now” under the Auto Update section.

      Hope that helps!

Gee, thanks for the tantalized announcement but WHERE DO I UPGRADE my version of Ghostery? Where’s the download LINK?

    • Pete on March 1, 2013 at 1:28 am

      Hi Larry,

The extension should have updated automatically.. if not, check your extensions library to make sure the auto update feature is enabled. (Tools > Addons > extensions > Gears icon > Update Add-ons Automatically).

Here is the link to the Mozilla add-ons page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/?src=search

I am looking for (and not finding) a walkthrough for Ghostery for Firefox. I am a complete novice at this, and I need some very basic stuff. Can you help me?

    Thanks, Margret

Without doubt absolutely the best blocker going. Many thanks for an excellent product.

  17. Matt J. on March 2, 2013 at 2:02 am

All the sudden, I am seeing a lot of trackers that I have previously blocked are not blocked now. When I go into the new and improved setting, the slider says it’s blocked but the tracker name is not crossed out like the other ones. Does anyone know what’s happening with this?

  18. Bert on March 2, 2013 at 3:34 am

Simplicity, effectiveness, genius and it works extremely well! Thanks for a great addon!!!

  19. pen on March 2, 2013 at 3:47 am

    Excellent!

  20. Azeddine on March 2, 2013 at 6:11 am

Thank you so much for an excellent instrument to keep us safe from intrusion while surfing the Internet. Keep on the good work.

  21. rupert lovejoy on March 2, 2013 at 8:59 am

I like it! But I dont like the fact that when Ghostery finds a tracker it shows it on the screen in the upper right corner. Often there is a log in / log out button you nedd to reach behind it.

    • Pete on March 2, 2013 at 8:52 pm

      Hi rupert,

      Thanks for using ghostery!

In your advanced tab of the options menu you can move the alert bubble to any corner, change the duration of view as well as turn it off.

      Hope that helps!

Ghostery is one of only two or three add-ons that I always ensure are up and running on my Firefox. Good work.

  24. digdug on March 3, 2013 at 11:16 pm

THANK YOU FOR THIS SOFTWARE TRACKING BLOCK SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Olib on March 4, 2013 at 11:09 am

This is great. You guys are simply GREAT. Thank you.

  26. Juan on March 4, 2013 at 11:41 pm

Sorry this is not simply another ‘I love you’ comment [but of course i do love you and do think the findings panel, for example, is very nicely designed and engineered].
But I remain with one important unanswered question – Does Ghostery actually block trackers or does it simply request that they not track? [Or is this the type of question you -as a company- would prefer not to answer?]

    • Pete on March 5, 2013 at 12:16 am

      Hi Juan,

      Thanks for using Ghostery!

Appreciate the feedback. Ghostery does block the tracker from communicating with its server. It is not a request.

  27. Vincent on March 5, 2013 at 5:49 pm

Is there going to be a release for Google Chrome with these new features/changes?

    • Pete on March 5, 2013 at 8:50 pm

      Hi Vincent,

We are working on bringing the other browsers in line with Firefox soon.

  28. dirk on March 5, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Das ist eine sehr sehr gute Arbeit von Ihnen. Bitte weiter so ;-)

    • Pete on March 5, 2013 at 8:49 pm

  29. Palebushman on March 6, 2013 at 9:07 am

Wow Team!!! Fantastic work, and thank you for an awesome Ghostery.
Firefox + Ghostery makes web browsing a very pleasant breeze.

  30. mary on March 6, 2013 at 8:13 pm

I don’t understand. My version of Firefox is 19, not 2.something. Please explain.

    • Pete on March 6, 2013 at 9:16 pm

      Hi Mary,

      Thanks for using Ghostery!

Firefox version is 19.. Ghostery should be version 2.9.2. You can check that by going to Tools > Ghostery > About Ghostery.

      Hope that helps!

      • mary on March 7, 2013 at 12:01 am

Thank you. Why not call it Ghostery 2.9 for Firefox instead of Ghostery for Firefox v2.9?

  31. Chris Dermott on March 6, 2013 at 10:36 pm

The best way to describe Ghostery:

    Effective
    Easy to use
    Well supported

    Basically – the dog’s bollux.

    • Pete on March 6, 2013 at 10:51 pm

      Thanks Chris!

  32. Michael McRitchie on March 7, 2013 at 9:46 am

I’m not a techie and I can’t believe Ghostery does so much without effort from me! It wasn’t until I installed your earlier version last year that I realised how many firms are spying on computer users. Many, many thanks to you all for this brilliant utility.

  33. Alice Warner on March 7, 2013 at 3:55 pm

I love Ghostery! One thing that I wish you could fix – the ghostery box on the upper right hand corner. It’s always in the way of things you need to click on.

    • Pete on March 7, 2013 at 5:13 pm

      Hi Alice,

      Thanks for using Ghostery!

You can move the alert bubble to any corner of the screen, change the duration or turn it off in the Display options section of the advanced tab.

      Hope that helps!

You Folks always do great great work, let me Tell you How I Know. I used to run win7 Ultimate on this PC HP-AMD64, was quite fast,But could do any thing about what cookies were going to my Hard Drive, So privacy was almost non-existant, PC was always freezing up, (how I knew Cookies were responsible) & my Down loads were slow, Plus, win7 never shows any progress of what’s going on with downloads, just a little wheel spinning, in your window, or in your Browser. when I finally decided to Dump windows & switch to Linux/Ubuntu, (my present OS), windons gave me a hard time of it & did not want 2 be erased from disk, Had 2 do it in parts, 1st loaded a Compatable Ubuntu Program, then put a Debian disk into cd/DVD drive, & sat back & watched the fight 4 my Hd begin, Took almost 7/8 hours to completely remove win7 Ultimate, which was the sorry-est software I ever purchased, consdered that $237.68 wasted, thrown away, & why I will not purchase anything on-line Or put my Card # online. & it’s not stored in PC files. Firefox & Ghostery are the Best Team-up I have eveer used, blocks all I want Blocked & I can un-block some or all items, usually block all.All MozillaFirefox cookies are white-listed. It’s once again a plaesure to browse the Net with Firefox & ghostery. Thanks guys, you’re always awesome!!
