You’re Making the Internet a Better Place.

Update: GoDaddy has posted a followup in their forums. This is how the internet should work all the time!

Last November, we posted a report detailing the slowest-loading 3rd party page elements (3pes) that our volunteer panel of GhostRank members had come across. The report took on a life of its own, as often happens on the web. GoDaddy – whose site analytics product made the top ten list – contacted us. Most people are familiar with GoDaddy’s domain name services (Ghostery.com was purchased through GoDaddy, for instance), but they also offer site hosting and the site measurement tool that showed up in our lag report. We had no idea what to expect…

The response we received wound up being very positive. Their developers were genuinely concerned about the report’s findings on GoDaddy Analytics. What’s even better – they fixed it. Check out our updated latency research:

This is very exciting. You can see how empowering it really is if you break the process down:

1. GhostRank volunteers send anonymous stats back to Ghostery

2. We make a report on the data that highlights slow 3rd party elements using the info

3. The developers of the 3pes see the report and fix the problem

4. Page load times are improved for millions of people

End result: you guys/girls just enhanced the internet for everyone who uses it!

Thank you.

WOW! It’s really exciting to see how these stats actually contribute to improving experience. 3pes developers – you rock!

I use Tor a lot. Will GhostRank reveal my real IP
address when I use Tor? How is Ghostery connected
to my computer when I am using Tor? If the connection
goes through Tor I will consider using Ghostery.
    Thank you.

GhostRank doesn’t reveal your IP address when using Tor. When using Tor, your activity gets routed through one of that extension’s nodes, Ghostery along with it! We also don’t even collect IP, so there’s nothing to worry about with that in the first place…

Does Ghostery interfere with or affect in any way streaming data from sites like Netflix from our computers to our televisions? Thank you!

Ghostery can sometimes interfere with widgets and other functionality on sites. This is easily circumvented by whitelisting the site or unblocking the offending tracker.

I’m new to Ghostery and can’t find where I select which things I want to allow for a single web site. With Ghostery full on I can’t load the video at http://www.aljazeera.com/watch_now/

The window does not stay up long enough for me to figure out what is the likely culprit.

And, alas, I have no clue where I go to unblocking the tracker that is preventing the video from showing.

BTW, Ghostery seems to work well alongside AdBlock Plus.

        Thanks.

Unblocking just Brightcove solves the no video problem for the aljazeera.com site.
