Complications and Botherations

Houston, we have a couple of minor problems

Hi Ghosterians,

Here’s an update on a couple of lingering issues out in Ghosteryland:

1) Safari’s setup wizard bug. Still waiting on Apple to approve the fix (submitted on August 9th).  It’s probably because they lost one Safari extension tester last month. You can hit the Safari feedback form and let them know you’re anxiously awaiting Ghostery v1.2.

2) Firefox update bug. Ghostery for FFX v2.6.0.1 solves the problem, and the update service is live. You can manually update Ghostery’s library by clicking Tools>Ghostery>Update bug lists.

3) Firefox purple box blocking cross-out display bug. Some users are experiencing a weird issue where they set Ghostery to block, but the 3pes aren’t crossed out in the purple box. Blocking is still happening though – so no worries there – we’ll solve that display problem and get an update out in the next couple of weeks.

Anything else we should be concerned with? Let us know on or forums or by sending us an email: support[at]ghostery.com. Your feedback is our most favorite thing ever, we really mean that.

Happy Browsing,
Andy K

Hello, I have a quick suggestion. Could you display the current version of Ghostery somewhere prominently on the website? It’s not displayed anywhere on the home page or on the “Releases -> Firefox” page, the Support page, the Commentary page… in fact, nowhere that I can see. Thanks.

After trying Ghostery for three days using IE8, I finally removed it from my system. It simply didn’t work. Most of the time, it would not allow me to “enable blocking”. Even when I went into Options, selected “All” for the bugs that I wanted to block, it would not work. When I’d go back in to check the selections under Options, none of them would be checked. This occurred repeatedly. It was just too squirrelly to deal with. Better luck on future updates!

Although I normally DO NOT recommend using beta versions (and especially alpha versions) of software, try downloading “Nightly”, Firefox’s latest implementation (http://nightly.mozilla.org), DO NOT UNINSTALL your current browser. I’ve been using it for the past 2 months and have been nothing but pleased with the speed and lack of errors of this browser. Install Ghostery and ONLY the add-ons that you really need. Also, please read comment posted 01/05/2012 by me.

Love Ghostery: Using Firefox Nightly 12.0a1 x64, however if you like watching videos from certain sites (i.e. The Weather Channel), you will have to allow trackers “DoubleClick” & “Brightcove” through, and perhaps other trackers for other video websites. If your video won’t play, try enabling each tracking site then reload the page, if the video does not play, disable that site and enable the next one until playback is achieved.

The purple box is showing up on printouts!!! Not good. It does it even when the purple box is not showing up on the screen.

With Ghostery in IE8, I have no Ghostery icon and no way I can find to set Ghostery preferences. I cannot get Lifehacker and some other sites to display properly in Opera, so I have to switch to IE8 and back again. Damned inconvenient and slow to implement. Please advise on the Ghostery prefs issue in IE8. Thanks!

    Hello,
I just dl’d Ghostery to get rid of the annoying Meebo bars.

Now on various websites the scripts that power Comment section functionality are not working. Is there a setting I should change in Options to correct this?

    Thanks

      Hi,

You can go into Ghostery’s options and unblock trackers that may be powering the comments, such as Disqus, or you can whitelist the site!

I’m using the Status-4-Evar add-on to Firefox to restore the status bar which is where the grey Ghostery icon appears, turning blue and showing the number of blocked items on a given page.

When I upgraded to Firefox 13, I now find that this icon will no longer float to the right. It seems to be leaving a large buffer space to its right, even when there are no blocks to report. And even when reporting blocks, the space remains to the right of the text. I can “customize” the layout and move other add-on icons to the left or the right of of the Ghostery, but I cannot move the Ghostery icon itself. (Note: There is a separate blue Ghostery icon in the customize menu that I can place, but this just duplicates the notification functionality.

This problem was not visible under Firefox 12. However, Ghostery itself may have been upgraded to version 2.7.2 at roughly the same time, so I don’t know if the problem is specific to the current version, or some interaction with changes in Firefox 13.

Is this a known problem, and can it be fixed so that it stops consuming so much space on the status bar?

    Thanks.

I tried installing Ghostery, and it worked fine, then all of the sudden, it won’t display in addon bar, or even work. What is wrong.

      Hi Scott,

Check your options on the Advanced Tab and make sure it’s still checked there.. maybe your settings got updated? Let me know.

Until today, I was able to watch ABC television online. Now it is blocked. How can I allow ABC to come up without knowing which one of the trackers, cookies, etc. might be the one that needs to be one to let me see ABC shows.

    • Pete on September 30, 2012 at 12:52 am

      Hi Carla,

      Thanks for using Ghostery!

      are you getting this error?

      Error
Unable to retrieve required files for playback. This may be caused by a connection problem or ad blocking software. Please disable any ad blocking software and try again.Error Code:300 10

We’ve automatically been notified of this issue. If you continue to receive this error, please let us know.

If so.. you can whitelist go.abc.com and all the videos work.

      Hope that helps!
